Despite having just a few Chelsea games under his belt, Édouard Mendy is already a fan favourite at Stamford Bridge.
Yet to concede a goal in the Premier League, the Senegal international has quickly put to bed the debate of any competition between him and Kepa Arrizabalaga, who appears to have a very steep hill in front of him to regain his place as the number one goalkeeper.
When he left, Mendy left a fairly big gap in Rennes’ squad, and was ultimately replaced by Alfred Gomis, his compatriot who used to play for Dijon.
The two players know each other well from their time in the national team together, and L’Equipe report on Wednesday a nice little bit of information about the way things happened at the Ligue 1 side.
They claim Gomis and Mendy get along so well that ‘when the moment came to facilitate his transfer to England, it’s Mendy himself who whispered Gomis’ name to his club’s board to replace him’.
They’ll also be facing each other on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
