Santos don’t own all of Gabigol’s registration rights, which makes the situation very difficult indeed. It’s often the case with Brazilian transfers, but Chelsea are one of the more experienced clubs in Europe on such things.

In mid July Sport Witness were made aware that, whilst a Chelsea bid was genuine and they want to buy the player, the club have no stomach for ever increasing prices.

On Monday, Spanish newspaper Marca say that Barcelona are now in for Gabigol, and that may well cause a problem for Chelsea. However, it’s unlikely to lead to the price war Chelsea fear, because Barcelona won’t pay over the odds for him either.

Stung by the Neymar transfer mess, there’s simply no way Barcelona will get themselves into such a situation again, especially for a player expected to play second fiddle to their trident.

This story will likely explode if Gabigol has a good Olympics for Brazil.
