It has gone quiet for a while, but João Mário’s links with Chelsea are back. The Blues are said to be ready to bid for the 2016 Euro champion, according to reports from Portugal.

O Jogo says Chelsea are preparing to offer Sporting €40m for the midfielder. Antonio Conte would be a a fan of the 23-year-old, and despite having made no official bids yet, the clubs have contacted each other through agents and intermediates.

The article mentions a story from Gazzetta Dello Sport published last weekend, which said Inter Milan would also be ready to make an official offer for the player. However, the Italian side would bid around €25m, which isn’t enough for Sporting to even consider to negotiate.

When we were covering the João Mário’s stories during the past few months, the papers said Sporting didn’t want to sell him for less than his release clause, which is €60m. Now they see €40m as a decent price, as Chelsea would be able to reach the complete amount if they add a few clauses in the contract, and O Jogo considers them ready to do so.

João Mário has changed agents a few months ago and now works with Kia Joorabchian. The Iranian agent has a good history with Chelsea, since he took part in moves for players including David Luiz, Oscar, Willian, Ramires and Alexandre Pato.
