Chelsea tried signing a number of defenders in the summer transfer window, but were knocked back every time before they completed a deal for David Luiz.
Serie A defenders Kalidou Koulbaly, Stefan de Vrij, Alessio Romagnoli, and a few others were linked to the London club, but nothing really materialised in the end.
It was reported Chelsea made an offer of more than €25m for AC Milan star Romagnoli, with Roman Abramovich mentioned, but this was rejected by the Serie A club.
According to Italian website Calciomercato, Chelsea could return for the 21-year-old in the January transfer window.
It’s reported Antonio Conte could look to sign a new defender, as he isn’t really convinced with his current set of options.
However, AC Milan are still very much reluctant to let Romagnoli leave the club, and consider him ‘untouchable’.
Antonio Conte is apparently a big fan of the young Italian defender, but the new owners of the Serie A club want to support Vincent Montella, and therefore are focused on keeping Romagnoli at the club.
