Chelsea ‘remain in the bidding’ for Atlético Madrid defender José María Giménez, but are prioritising a move for Jules Koundé first.
That’s according to La Razón, who say the defender could be targeted if Atlético are willing to reduce their asking price for the Uruguayan.
They cover claims from El Larguero and journalist Martín Talavera, who says that Giménez, alongside the likes of Saúl Ñíguez, Sime Vrsaljko and Víctor Machín ‘Vitolo’ will all be put up for sale at the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.
That report made no mention of any clubs being interested at this moment in time, but La Razón pick that up and throw Chelsea’s name into the hat for Giménez.
They say the Blues ‘remain in the bidding’ for the centre back, who was named as a possible target for them by the English press back in February.
However, their priority is Koundé, whom they ‘hope to remove’ from Sevilla for a figure of around €80m.
That’s a big price, though, and so Thomas Tuchel’s side ‘could try again’ to get Giménez so long as Atlético are willing to negotiate below that amount.
Whether the Spanish side are willing to do that remains to be seen, given they rejected an €85m offer from Manchester City in the past.
Either way, it appears he remains on Chelsea’s list of potential targets, with a centre back high on Tuchel’s list of targets for the summer.
