Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has been on the pitch for 154 minutes across six matches in all club competitions this season.

Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham are ahead of the 34-year-old in the pecking order, and with the duo impressing when given opportunities, it makes it even more difficult for the France international to find regular minutes under Frank Lampard.

Despite the limited opportunities at the west London club, Didier Deschamps has called up the former Arsenal man for the national team.

However, the France manager has suggested Giroud should look for a “different solution” to retain his place with Les Bleus.

According to L’Equipe, the Manchester United forward’s latest display for his country could lead to a ‘debate’ over who should be the No.9 starting for the world champions at Euro 2020.

Although Martial and Giroud have different profiles, the newspaper explains the Chelsea player’s ‘status’ with the national team raises questions today. As per the report, the veteran player ‘sees his status crumble’.

The newspaper states: ‘The imprint of Martial’s match in Portugal will remain lasting on Deschamps. If Giroud sees his club situation continue, and depending on Mbappé’s choice of positioning, the question may perhaps arise.’

Beyond Lampard’s man and Martial, Deschamps can also rely on Wissam Ben Yedder, who has six goals and an assist to his name in 10 league appearances with AS Monaco.

The options available for Deschamps will only create more worry for Giroud. He will need to play regularly in order to be his manager’s first choice striker for Euro 2020, and that would mean more minutes with Chelsea.

It’s unlikely that will happen at Stamford Bridge, and therefore, a move away from the English club in January seems like the best solution for Giroud.
