Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella was an integral part of the Spain squad that won the Euro 2024 in the summer.

La Roja overcame England in the final and the 26-year-old assisted Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner in the 86th minute. They made it to the final after defeating Germany and France in the quarter-final and semi-final respectively.

Arsenal summer signing Mikel Merino scored the winner against Germany late in extra time, minutes after Die Mannschaft weren’t awarded a penalty.

The Chelsea player appeared as a guest on La Revuelta. He talked about what he went through when the ball hit his hand inside Spain’s box and his comments are relayed by Marca.

Premier League referee Anthony Taylor was in charge for the clash between Germany and Spain. The left-back claims he calmed down immediately after the match official refused to award a penalty for Germany, when the tie was still 1-1 in the extra time.

“Oh my God, what a scare. I wet my pants. I looked at the referee and I saw for sure: ‘It’s not a penalty!’ I said to myself: ‘Calm down’,” he said.

La Revuelta host David Broncano asked the Blues fullback whether it should have been a penalty.

‘I was terrified, to be honest. I looked at the referee quickly… ‘No, no…’. And he told me ‘no’, and then that was it,” Cucurella explained.

“I was scared because that referee had it in for me, a little bit. He was an English referee, and we had had a couple of blows in the Premier League. I already saw that he owed me one.”

The Spain international has suggested Taylor’s decision helped him avoid being hated in his country.

“I could have been the most hated person in Spain,” he added.
