Three days ago, La Repubblica reported Chelsea have made a €60m offer to AC Milan for Mike Maignan. It was also explained the Blues could look elsewhere if the goalkeeper were to snub them and sign a new deal at the San Siro.
On Wednesday, the Serie A side confirmed Paolo Maldini’s exit and this could have an impact on the 27-year-old’s future at the San Siro.
That’s according to Milan expert Alessandro Carra, who told Calciomercato.it’s TV PLAY that Chelsea could make an effort to snatch the Frenchman away from the Rossoneri in the summer.
“The big problem is Maignan, his social media release was cryptic. He has a three-year contract but he’s the only one of the big names who hasn’t renewed. For about 10 days Maldini had been starting to talk about this renewal. Maldini represented a guarantee,” he said.
“Chelsea and Manchester United are looking for a goalkeeper and have offered the player €8m a year [deal].”
Carra has further stressed the stopper isn’t willing to continue with Stefano Pioli’s side after Maldini’s exit. His sale can help the Italian club carry out signings in the upcoming. window.
“Maignan does not want to stay in a nebulous Milan and Milan’s idea would be to finance the entire market with the sale of Maignan… if an offer between €80m and €100m were to arrive,” Carra explained.
“Offers have not yet arrived, at the moment these are hypotheses. Certainly, Maignan wants a strong adjustment to his salary, also because Maldini had promised him such.”
Now it’s over to Chelsea and other interested parties, but it’s unlikely anyone would pay €80-100m and it’s unlikely they’d need to.
