There’s many ways to describe a club being close to completing a signing, but Sky Deutschland have come up with a new one today.

They report Chelsea are ‘centimetres’ away from securing Kai Havertz.

Bayer Leverkusen have been prepared to sell their star player this summer, but have wanted €100m for him. Many reports have spoken of an agreed deal consisting of €80m plus a further €20m in bonus payments, yet just last week it was reported in Germany that Bayer were holding out €100m guaranteed.

Die Welt say that again today, yet at no point has it felt like the transfer wasn’t happening, just that the two sides are pushing hard to get the deal they want. One solution, which could allow everyone to present themselves as a winner, is the €20m worth of bonuses being so easy to achieve that they’re nearly automatic anyway.

Peter Bosz, Bayer’s manager, spoke today about the likelihood of Havertz leaving: “I expect that he will not come back, but that’s just my expectation. It can always be the case that it doesn’t work out in football in the end. But they have been negotiating for so long, so as a coach I assume that the probability is greater that he will not come back.”

Surprised at huge transfer fees still being paid despite the Covid-19 crisis, Bosz added: “It’s difficult to judge because I’m only a coach, but that’s the market. There are clubs, and in this case Roman Abramowitsch, who want to pay. And they will have calculated it. Kai isn’t the only one who goes to Chelsea.”
