Manchester United and Chelsea ‘want’ to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona this summer but face real competition from Paris Saint Germain for his signature.
That’s according to Sport, who cover the player and say the Dutchman’s future is set to be a hot topic once again in the summer transfer window.
The newspaper explains that PSG are a ‘real danger’ to Barcelona for De Jong, as they’re set to free up a huge amount in their wage bill with the departure of Kylian Mbappe.
Their plan is to completely reinvent their project with the money and that could lead to an assault for De Jong’s signature.
His future at Barcelona is currently up in the air because if he continues to refuse to reduce his salary the club will have no option but to put him on the transfer market.
The newspaper says that Manchester United and Chelsea ‘want him’ but the big offer could come from Paris, where they plan to remodel their midfield with the arrival of a star name. De Jong and Joshua Kimmich are the names currently on the table.
For now, De Jong would prefer to remain at Barcelona, but he is aware they want to change his contract or ‘force him to leave’, similar to last year when they were ‘willing to accept’ a bid from Manchester United.
De Jong refused to leave at that point but will now see if any club is willing to bet on him and offer a ‘tailored sports project’. The key to seducing him is the opportunity to win titles rather than anything economic.
Neither Manchester United nor Chelsea can offer that at the moment given they’re out of Europe and sixth and 10th in the Premier League respectively.
Thus, PSG may have the upper hand and they are ‘willing to bet big’ on him as long as he agrees to open a negotiation.
