Cesar Azpilicueta will not be joining Barcelona this summer and has instead decided to extend his stay at Chelsea.

That’s according to journalist Gerard Romero, who provides details on the big turnaround for the Spaniard.

Azpilicueta has been linked with a move to the Camp Nou all summer, with Xavi Hernandez reportedly keen to add his experience to the squad and the player equally open to the move.

The potential deal has been delayed and delayed by Barcelona as they sort out their finances and try to reach an agreement with Chelsea.

There has been growing frustration over the lack of movement on all sides and it seems Azpilicueta has now had enough.

Romero reports that he ‘will not’ sign with Barcelona this summer and will instead renew his deal at Stamford Bridge for two years.

He explains that the defender wanted to have his future clear before the start of the Premier League season.

Barcelona had asked him to ‘wait a few more days’ so they could solve their financial issues with La Liga and thus ratify the deal, but Azpilicueta has decided otherwise.

According to Romero, he ‘decided this morning’ to stay at Chelsea and has communicated that to both Barcelona and Xavi.

The move, then, appears to be completely dead in the water and we’ll now wait for news of Azpilicueta’s new deal in London instead.
