Chelsea youngster David Datro Fofana has been praised by FC Union Berlin manager Urs Fischer for his response to a recent suspension for indiscipline.
That’s according to Berlin Kurier, who cover the striker today and the ‘special praise’ from Fischer ahead of their clash with Eintracht Frankfurt.
For those that don’t know, Fofana has been having a rough time at Union since his arrival on loan from Chelsea in the summer.
He had planned for a big season of development in the Bundesliga when he arrived but has instead found himself struggling to impress and labelled a transfer flop by most.
That’s led to frustration for him and that was recently released when he refused to shake Fischer’s hand after being substituted in the second half of a Champions League game.
That incident led to further criticism of him and an eventual ban by the club, who suspended him from team training and their subsequent two fixtures.
However, it seems Fofana has taken that well, with Berlin Kurier reporting that after the ‘scandal’ and subsequent suspension, the striker ‘can now go from 0 to 100’.
They say he now only ‘showed remorse’ for his actions but also ‘stepped on the gas’ in training and reacted in a manner that very much impressed Fischer.
“It has to be said that he trained very well,” he is reported as saying. “He was there with full enthusiasm and showed that he accepted it.”
Whether that now leads to a massive improvement on the pitch and of his loan deal in general, remains to be seen, but it does show that perhaps the Chelsea youngster is not quite the bad egg he appeared to be, something the Blues can at least take encouragement from.
