Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has admitted he would like to return to Spain at some point, amid apparent interest from former club Barcelona.
The Spaniard only joined Chelsea in the summer, securing a €65.3m move from Brighton, who he only joined a year earlier in a €18m deal.
That move was one of the major surprises of the summer transfer window, but he has already been linked with a return to Barcelona in recent weeks.
Estadio Deportivo explain that Barcelona are working to put together their squad for next season, and the Chelsea full back is ‘again in contention’ to return to the club where he grew up.
Barca want a player who can share the left-flank with Alejandro Balde as Marcos Alonso’s future is uncertain and both Xavi and those above him believe the club need to move on from veteran Jordi Alba.
That is why they have Cucurella in mind as he is a player that Xavi and the board like and he is open to the move.
This is something the Chelsea man recently confirmed when he was awarded the best Catalan footballer of the season award by the Catalan Football Federation.
During that awards gala he was asked about a hypothetical return to his old club and again insisted he wants it at some point.
“I didn’t get the chance and I’ve always had a thorn in my side. If in the future I had the opportunity, we would value it, but it would be very nice,” Estadio report him saying.
Whether that happens or not remains to be seen, though, as Barcelona would not be able to afford the €50-60m it would cost to sign him from Chelsea.
The only possibility of that happening is if they activate more ‘levers’, something the Spanish football federation have already warned they are unlikely to sanction after this summer’s efforts.
