Chelsea have ‘returned to inquire’ about Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries after discussions about him earlier this summer.
That’s according to Gazzetta Dello Sport, who say the Dutchman’s name has not disappeared from Thomas Tuchel’s thinking.
He was brought up in negotiations over Romelu Lukaku but that deal took a different direction and he never ended up being a part of the Belgian’s return to Inter.
Chelsea have been thinking about Dumfries since, though, and yesterday they ‘made the move’ for him by ‘sounding out’ Inter once again.
They made a ‘request for information’ about the defender, looking to discover what the player’s situation is and how a transfer might happen.
The Blues are currently just ‘sounding out the ground’ with Inter, who have responded by saying they will not do a deal for less than €40m.
That’s considered a high valuation for the defender but the Nerazzurri have no intention of moving from it. Chelsea consider it ‘excessive’, yet have not closed the file on Dumfries completely.
Gazzetta’s belief is that the two clubs will meet in the middle somehow and Inter are expecting Chelsea to return with a ‘possible evaluation’ in the coming days.
They’re not particularly keen on losing Dumfries as it would force them to enter the market themselves, however, the need for money to help their tight finances cannot be ignored and €40m or thereabouts would be welcomed warmly.
