The Italian media continues to run claims of Chelsea and Manchester United interest in Andre Onana, although a lot of it seems to be from an Inter Milan perspective.
Whilst the official stance is that Onana is very happy in Italy, has moved his family to the country, doesn’t want to leave in the summer, and that Inter feel the same way, reading between the lines tells a different story.
Friday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport has Onana on the front page, and the newspaper is hyping interest from Chelsea. It’s explained that Inter want to keep the goalkeeper but need some money, and €40m is estimated as a transfer fee.
Gazzetta report Chelsea have ‘kicked into high gear’ for Onana, and plan to offload Edouard Mendy in the summer. The Inter goalkeeper is at the top of a small list of replacement targets.
Despite all those claims it has to be wondered whether this is all being encouraged by Inter in hope rather than expectation. Onana has done reasonably well with the Series A side, but some would question whether he’s much better than what Chelsea already have.
