Even though the Lisbon derby between Sporting and Benfica was obviously the big match in Portugal at the weekend, it seems Chelsea had their eyes on something else.
Newspaper Record today reports that the Blues sent a scout to Porto on Sunday, where they watched the Dragons playing Vitória Guimarães.
For now, it’s not clear whether Chelsea had a specific target to follow or if they were just looking for some talents in that match.
Porto players would be the most obvious option for the Blues, but with the Dragons losing the match 2-1, it was tough to find big quality in Sérgio Conceição’s side. Fullback Wendell and winger Francisco Conceição still managed to show something good. At Vitória, all attention should go to Jota Silva, who was decisive for the heroic win.
Chelsea haven’t been linked to any Porto or Vitória players lately, so we should soon see if there was any result from this weekend’s job.
The Blues had scouted the Dragons in a match against Sporting last month, and even though all newspapers said they were following Lions star Viktor Gyokeres back then, perhaps a rising interest in a Porto player is what attracted them again this time.
