It’s now no longer a secret, and everyone knows that Chelsea were interested in signing Rafael Leao towards the end of the transfer window.

In fact, they even made some sort of unofficial offer to Milan, who rejected the advances of the Blues, keen to keep their star forward in Italy.

The plan is to renew his contract, but that still hasn’t been done, and Chelsea continue to lurk, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.

The newspaper cover the Portuguese player’s future and what it could consist of, making it clear that the Stamford Bridge side ‘continue to send clear messages’.

This stems directly from Todd Boehly, as the Milan man is ‘currently a prime target’ for the American owner.

That being said, Gazzetta do point out Leao ‘is in a hurry to sign a new contract’ at San Siro, ‘wants to stay in Milan and the Rossoneri remain his first option’.

The problem is that he wants a hefty salary increase, as the €1.5-2m he is currently earning do not reflect what he brings to the team, and while ‘dialogue is underway, the agreement is still a long way off’.

That should give Chelsea time to manoeuvre their own pieces on the chessboard, because it seems that if Leao doesn’t get the recognition he feels he deserves with the Serie A side, he could end up looking elsewhere.

If that happens, we all know the Blues will be more than happy to give him the money he wants.
