Chelsea are set to complete a deal for FC Basel’s Renato Veiga this summer, according to a report.
The 20-year-old is a product of Sporting’s academy but didn’t represent their first team. The Lions sold him to the Swiss club in August 2023, and he featured regularly last season when available for selection.
Veiga was mainly used as a defensive midfielder while also operating as a centre-back and in the middle of the pitch on a few occasions.
AS claim several European clubs, including Chelsea and AC Milan, have come forward to sign the versatile player. The Serie A side have lost to the Blues in the transfer race.
Chelsea have ‘moved ahead’ of other clubs who have been ‘very interested’ to secure his services. It’s claimed the Premier League side have ‘closed the hiring’ of the Portugal U21 international for a fee around €14m.
AS say this is their own information and add that now only the official announcement is missing for Veiga to arrive at Chelsea.
Basel paid €4.3m to buy the player last summer and his impending sale to Enzo Maresca’s side will allow them to make a capital gain. Sporting will also benefit from this operation as they will receive 10% of the fee.
The west London club are set to sign a player ‘with a great future ahead’.
