Athletic Club Bilbao are eyeing up a move for Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to La Razón, who say that the Spaniard could be interested in a return to Spain after nine years at Stamford Bridge.

They explain that, after the arrival of Marcelino as manager and the success in the Spanish Super Cup, the Basque team are already thinking about next season.

The first name ‘on the table’ is Azpilicueta’s, who is set to enter the final year of his contract at Chelsea and could be ‘quite affordable’.

It’s believed that there could be something of a ‘revolution’ at Chelsea following the arrival of Thomas Tuchel and Atheltic are ‘attentive’ to that, believing Azpilicueta could end up being a casualty.

Marcelino would welcome his arrival at the club and the defender, ‘could welcome’ a return to La Liga, where he played for three seasons before a move to Marseille in 2010/11.

Why that would be the case isn’t mentioned, although he has found himself increasingly out of the picture at Chelsea over the last 18 months as Reece James was preferred by Frank Lampard.

That might change under Tuchel, with this very much presented as a wait and see what happens, which is what Athletic are very much doing.
