After repeatedly being linked with a move to Manchester United, Chelsea recently joined the race for Real Madrid centre-back Raphaël Varane.

Last week, we carried a report from AS, who explained the defender has been identified as a priority target by Thomas Tuchel.

The France international turned 28 on Sunday and with a contract expiring in 2022, Mundo Deportivo claims his Los Blancos future is ‘in the air’.

According to the report, the La Liga side and the former Lens man have started talks over a new deal. Zinedine Zidane’s side want the player to sign a new contract by lowering his salary.

Varane ‘doesn’t seem convinced’ to accept these conditions, and could look for a way out in the next market.

United and PSG are ‘very interested’, but the newspaper explains the Blues are ‘ahead in this race’ for the player.

The World Cup winner’s signing is an ‘express request’ of Tuchel and therefore, the London club are ‘willing to pay’ the €70m fee demanded by Real Madrid to secure Varane’s signature.
