Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has admitted he and the rest of the squad were “surprised” by Marcel Sabitzer’s move to Manchester United.
The Austrian midfielder joined Manchester United on loan on deadline day of the January transfer window as a surprise addition to Erik ten Hag’s squad.
He arrived as a replacement for Christian Eriksen, who has been ruled out for several months with an injury picked up in the cup win over Reading.
Sabitzer had not been linked with a move away from Bayern before that point, despite struggling to establish himself as a key player for the German side this season.
He has featured 24 times for them in all competitions but has largely played a substitute role, featuring in the starting 11 just seven times and in only 39% of the available minutes.
He’ll be looking to turn that around at Manchester United, although it seems Muller is hoping to have him back after that.
“I personally – and I think the team as well – was surprised,” Web.de report him saying.
“(He’s) a cool guy and a super player. He will be back in the summer. So, the chapter isn’t over yet.”
Whether that actually happens remains to be seen, though, with Sport 1 journalist Kerry Hau reporting that his time at Bayern may be at an end.
“Sabitzer was very popular in the team, he always pulled along great and never caused any trouble,” he added.
“Sabitzer and Bayern – that probably no longer has a future. Manchester United don’t have an option to buy him, but the Bayern bosses are probably hoping that his good performances at a world level club will increase his market value.”
