With football now suspended throughout Europe until further notice, there is little else to talk about other than the current Covid-19 outbreak and potential transfers that will happen at some point in the near future.
The situation is far worse in Italy than anywhere else on the continent so far, and they were the first to postpone their league; a measure most countries quickly followed.
England took a bit longer than the rest, but after some severe criticism and players/staff members getting infected, a decision was made, although for Watford sporting consultant Nicola Salerno, the delay was too long.
Speaking to Mediagol in Italy, the Hornets employee was asked about the prevention measures.
He said: “I would say it was certainly possible and necessary to intervene earlier. From a technical point of view, it certainly wasn’t a timely decision. People didn’t expect this level to be reached. I would say the question was taken a little lightly, both by some politicians and be personalities from the world of entertainment.
“Someone likened the emergency to a cold, a manageable thing that would be overcome without major effects. The situation then became dramatic and still is. We aren’t coming out of it and therefore everything becomes more and more worrying and difficult”.
The Watford consultant also criticised the fact many big events, like concerts, were still taking place across the country, which he described as ‘very dangerous’.
He also urged people to ‘take autonomous precautionary measure, be very careful and avoid crowded places because a sneeze or a cough is enough to get infected’.
With football now on pause, we are likely to see many more such interviews in the coming weeks, especially if things don’t improve in the near future.
