At this stage of the rumour mill, clubs get linked to so many players that sometimes it’s easy to mistake one footballer for another.
In the past few days, Newcastle United have been said to be interested in Benfica striker Gonçalo Ramos. It’s been reported the Magpies were offering €60m for the attacker, while Benfica want at least €80m and won’t make any discounts.
Then there’s another Gonçalo the English side are said to be chasing, and that’s Sporting defender Gonçalo Inácio. About that pursuit, newspaper Record has something to say today.
Recent reports from the English media have been claiming that Newcastle are ‘particularly attentive’ to him, and evaluating an offer of less than his €45m release clause.
Record is very sure that a deal wouldn’t be possible that way. It’s claimed that scenario would have a ‘certain outcome’, which would be Sporting turning down the bid.
It’s said the ‘exit door will continue to be closed’ until someone triggers the defender’s release clause. The Lions actually want to keep him in their squad and raise that amount to €60m via a new deal.
The newspaper confirms Newcastle’s interest in Inácio and points out they scouted him in the match against Juventus last season. Still, they say there’s a ‘huge distance’ between that observation and a potential summer deal.
