Celtic have lost the race for Nice defender Christophe Hérelle, according to claims from the French media today.

Journalist Loic Tanzi, from RMC, says the player will end up joining Ligue 1 side Brest.

The French club will reportedly pay €5m for Hérelle, who’s signing a four-year deal with them. He’s expected to join them on Sunday night.

Loic Tanzi makes it pretty clear that Celtic were strong in the race, claiming that the Scottish side have fought ‘until the end’ for the signing.

It isn’t clear if the bid from the Hoops wasn’t good enough, or if the player chose to stay in France instead of making a move to Neil Lennon’s side.

Celtic will have to find other defensive targets for the transfer window.

Not long ago, the Scottish side were linked to another centre-back from the French league. That’s Kiki Kouyaté, from second division side Troyes. But despite a first report from early June, we haven’t seen any developments on this story.
