Following the rather sudden news that Celtic and Brendan Rodgers had frozen the exit of Gustaf Lagerbielke to Lecce after the injury to Cameron Carter-Vickers, there is some frustration in Puglia.
There was a genuine excitement ahead of the Swede’s arrival, seemingly due to the fact the deal was seen as a coup by the Serie A side, who had been negotiating for a while to try and bring him in.
Celtic’s decision to halt the talks is covered by Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia, relayed by Calcio Lecce, who are adamant the Scottish side ‘must’ give Lecce an answer on Wednesday when it comes to whether or not they will allow Lagerbielke to make the move.
The centre-back is said to have already ‘had an agreement’ with the Italians ‘for some time’, and the talks are said to be at a ‘turning point’.
There is a need to understand whether the ‘little problems’ that emerged on Tuesday ‘will be overcome’, and something has to happen in the next few hours, because if Celtic will stand in his way, then Lecce ‘will have to look elsewhere’.
Just to give you an idea of how excited everyone was at the idea of the Swede arriving in Lecce, Corriere del Mezzogiorno’s Puglia edition even had him on the front page.
They are a bit behind on their reporting, failing to address what happened late on Tuesday, reporting the Italians are ‘one step away’ from signing the 23-year-old.
We all know things have evolved since then, but the excitement was there, and probably still is in hope that Celtic give them the news they are all hoping for.
