When they signed Robin Olsen from FC Copenhagen back in 2018, AS Roma didn’t really expect it to go as badly as it did.
The Swede was brought in to try and replace Alisson Becker, a near impossible task in itself, but he failed to live up to the great standards set by the Brazilian and was quickly replaced by Pau López this year before being sent on loan to Cagliari.
That move also didn’t go as well as hoped, and the 30-year-old now finds himself back in Rome at a club looking to offload him, which is where Celtic come in.
Aware of the situation and in need of some goalkeeping reinforcement of their own, Neil Lennon’s side came knocking for the Sweden international, but their offer of a straight loan with no fee didn’t go down well.
According to Corriere dello Sport, AS Roma’s answer was a ‘dry no’, making it clear they want some money in any deal for the shot stopper.
When said offer was made isn’t clear, as Celtic completed a deal to sign Vasilios Barkas from AEK Athens on July 30th, so we don’t know if the idea was to bring Olsen in on loan to Parkhead to provide competition for the Greek.
Either way, if Lennon and his staff still want the Roma goalkeeper around for the rest of their already started season, they’ll need to come up with something better than ‘can we just have him for free for a year, please?’.
