Celtic have stepped up their efforts for Sandefjord defender Zinedin Smalkjović with an improved offer of €4.5m plus €2m in bonuses.
Journalist Rudy Galetti reports that the Scottish champions have taken the first steps towards a deal for the 22-year-old with an improved offer now on the table.
Celtic’s new bid
According to Galetti, though, Sandefjord are in no rush to sell. They feel no pressure to accept a quick deal, with Zinedin Smalkjović tied to a deal until 2028.
Furthermore, they know that there is increased competition for the defender’s signature. Olympiacos, Hull City, Rangers, Fenerbahce, Toulouse, Feyenoord and Lyon are all closely monitoring the centre back and have made enquiries about him.
There’s no mention of Sandefjord’s asking price at this moment in time. The likes of Transfermarkt currently value him at €3m, the highest he has ever been valued. So Celtic are already offering €1.5m over that valuation as a fixed fee.
Celtic may need more
Sandefjord seem determined to leverage their position, though. They’re presumably hoping that the number of suitors can allow them to create an auction around their player this summer. They certainly don’t seem to be in a rush to accept Celtic’s current offer.
Whether the Hoops keep upping their offers, remains to be seen. Either way, Sandefjord are set to make a major profit on the defender.
Smalkjović joined them on a free transfer last summer and he went on to establish himself as a key player this season, with 39 appearances and 3414 minutes in all competitions.
Now he has suitors all around Europe, including Celtic. They’re at the front of the queue and have already submitted an improved offer of €4.5m plus €2m. That seems unlikely to be enough to convince his club into a sale at this moment in time, though. Another improved bid may be needed to get this one properly moving.
