Celtic have started working on improving Brendan Rodgers’ squad and have identified FC Augsburg’s Elvis Rexhbeçaj as a target for next season.
That’s according to Fussball Transfers, who state Celtic are one of the clubs to have shown interest in the 27-year-old.
The Kosovo international has played 24 games this season and has to make a decision over his future.
Several clubs outside Germany have already asked about the midfielder and this includes Celtic, Beşiktaş and Parma. In addition, unnamed clubs from the Championship have also made contact.
Rexhbeçaj has just over 15 months left on his contract and the Bundesliga club have been trying to secure his long-term future. The two parties haven’t yet found an agreement, and negotiations have stalled.
That’s mainly because Jess Thorup handed him only one appearance in February and left him as an unused substitute in three league games. This didn’t please the player, who made two appearances this month before the international break.
If Rexhbeçaj doesn’t renew his contract in the coming months, the German club are likely to sell him in the next window to avoid losing him for free in 2026. There’s no mention of the fee Celtic or other interested clubs need to sign him.
