On Monday afternoon, the breakthrough many at Lecce were hoping for happened, and reports started coming in that the signing of Gustaf Lagerbielke was on its way.
The Serie A side had been trying to get the centre-back for a while, but were facing issues with paying the Swede’s entire wages, needing Brendan Rodgers’ side to help them out a little bit.
Well, Corriere dello Sport reveal that’s exactly what happened, as their director Pantaleo Corvino ‘asked for and received an effort’ from Celtic to get the deal over the line.
It’s reported the Scottish Premiership side are in fact ‘willing to cover part of the salary’ the defender is receiving in Glasgow.
This was great news for Lecce, as Lagerbielke was always considered ‘one of the very first targets’ to bolster their defender.
The player is now ‘expected in Italy’ to finalise the move to Lecce, where he will ‘start his new adventure’ in what is described as a loan with an option to buy.
In short, Lagerbielke will only have spent a handful of months after his move to Celtic Park in the summer from Elfsborg, leaving a few questions needing to be answered as to why he was bought in the first place.
