FC Twente’s Sondre Ørjasæter has confirmed Celtic’s interest in securing his services. Brendan Rodgers seemed determined to bring him to Celtic Park last summer, but a move never materialised.
The 21-year-old left Norwegian side Sarpsborg 08 for FC Twente in August. Prior to that, he was being courted by other clubs including Celtic and PSV Eindhoven.
Ørjasæter has given an interview to Voetbal International and discussed Celtic and the Eredivisie club’s approaches. PSV Inside have relayed his comments.
The winger explained it was ‘bizarre’ that a club like PSV wanted to take him away from Sarpsborg 08. He then went on to talk about interest shown by other clubs, including Celtic.
According to the Norwegian, Brendan Rodgers’ side had a firm desire to acquire his signature. Celtic weren’t able to close the operation due to their failure to agree terms.
“A few other clubs showed interest, sometimes it faded away again. I left everything to my father and agent,” he said.
“It’s true that Celtic became serious. But we couldn’t reach an agreement. The fee Sarpsborg was asking for was a problem.”
Had Celtic reached an agreement with Sarpsborg 08, they then had to convince him.
“But I also didn’t think it was the right move for me. Celtic is a huge club, with a great history, but I honestly don’t think I’m cut out for Scottish football,” Ørjasæter explained.
