Do you want the good news or the bad news first?

We’ll start with the bad news.

Sport report Barcelona owe Lionel Messi €52m in unpaid wages.

They explain that the amount is due to deferred wages during the Covid-19 crisis. Last year it was widely reported the club’s stars had taken huge pay cuts to help Barcelona balance their incomes when income took a huge hit.

As Sport suggest, it would turn out that these weren’t actual pay cuts. Instead, players deferred a large percentage of their wages, with the agreement they’d then get it back at a later date.

For Messi, the amount to be paid back is €52m, and Barcelona expect to do this by the end of 2022.

Sport say claims of a loyalty bonus also being due are baseless.

In better news, Mundo Deportivo report there’s still confidence both Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia will be registered in time to face Real Sociedad.

The Catalan newspaper states: ‘At Barça there is conviction they will have no problems registering their players with La Liga for Sunday’s match against Real Sociedad.’

This would be without any players leaving or anyone accepting a big pay cut.
