Birmingham City are now even closer to success in their pursuit of Carlos Vicente.

Earlier on Monday, Sport Witness brought together Sunday evening’s events. Alavés beat Real Betis 2-1, with Vicente scoring the first goal.

The 26-year-old was named Man of the Match and given 8/10 for his efforts.

‘The Aragonese forward hit Betis right from the start with his tenth goal of the season. It was Vicente’s calling card in the match. He was electric on the right flank, constantly overlapping, taking on defenders, and delivering crosses. He then worked tirelessly at the back and continued to cause problems with his pace. A fantastic performance.’

Alavés supporters are well aware of the negotiations with Birmingham City and chanted for their player to stay. That, it appears, didn’t work and afterwards the winger was seen apparently saying his goodbyes.

Local Basque media reported an agreement in principle with Chris Davies’ side. Therefore, Vicente to Birmingham City was closer than it’s ever been.

Closer than it’s ever been until now, that is.

Voetbal International have raised the white flag on behalf of Ajax. As would be expected from a Dutch source, it’s claimed Vicente preferred the Amsterdam club but is going to Birmingham City for money.

VI reckon he’ll be earning €3m a season with the Blues.

Marca also get in on the act, from a Spanish perspective: ‘Carlos Vicente is very close to becoming a Birmingham City player, with negotiations between the English club and Deportivo Alavés in their final stages and about to be completed for a fee of around €8m.

‘Both clubs are finalising the details of a definitive agreement that would provide a significant financial boost to the Vitoria-based club in this final stretch of the winter transfer window. The winger from Zaragoza is ready to travel to England in the coming hours to complete the final formalities of the deal.’

The Spanish newspaper go on to say the transfer comes at a great time for Vicente. He’s having the best season of his career and is set to arrive at Birmingham City at the peak of his powers.

Marca add: Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the next step will be the player’s trip to undergo a medical examination and sign his new contract, which could be officially announced very soon.’

Birmingham City have clearly put in some effort for Carlos Vicente.
