Matheus Cunha started for Brazil in their 2-0 win over Senegal at the Emirates Stadium, a match highlighted in the Brazilian press as Carlo Ancelotti’s most demanding test so far.

The Manchester United forward played close to goal and produced one of the most active first halves of his international career, with four attempts, two shots off the woodwork and constant movement between Senegal’s centre-backs.

Speaking after the match, Carlo Ancelotti underlined how the Manchester United player fits into his structure and why he values Cunha’s ability to move between lines.

Asked about the forward’s role, the coach explained: “Well, the position of Matheus Cunha is very important for us, because he can help us in the build-up from an area between attacking midfielder and striker. With the three up front, he can make fantastic plays.”

Brazil used Cunha’s mobility to open pockets and speed up transitions, especially during the first 25 minutes, when the side created the clearest chances of the game.

His positioning also allowed wide players to stay higher, which helped Brazil control territory and stretch the Senegal back line.

Cunha’s recent interviews in Brazil have highlighted his versatility and maturity, and this appearance offered another example of why Ancelotti continues to select him.

The United forward delivered a performance that combined aggression, link-up play and tactical discipline, strengthening his case for more minutes as the team moves through the final friendlies of the year.

The next steps will depend on how the manager balances options in the attacking unit, but Cunha showed he remains firmly in the conversation.
