Maximilian Wöber will return to Leeds United after spending a season on loan at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Gladbach have been keen to extend the Austria international’s stay, but Bild say they aren’t prepared to meet the €15m fee requested by Leeds.
The centre-back went out on loan because he didn’t want to play in the Championship, and the report says he maintains that stance.
Wöber and Leeds have been hoping for him to improve his valuation by impressing at the Euros.
His plan hasn’t gone well so far as the 28-year-old scored an own goal in Austria’s 1-0 defeat to France on Monday. The Leeds player, who was cautioned in the first half, was on the pitch for 59 minutes. Bild suggest he was taken off after a poor performance.
This has pleased the Bundesliga side considering their director, Roland Virkus, is still trying to bring the defender back to the club.
Meanwhile, Austria manager Ralf Rangnick has come out in defence of Wöber.
“No one, no one blames Maxi. It was a very unfortunate situation that he was standing right there at that moment – he can’t unscrew his head either,” he said.
Austria and Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Patrick Pentz has also supported the Leeds man.
“Mbappé’s ball into the middle was very sharp – you can’t blame Max for that. Things like that just happen,” Pentz explained.
The German transfer vultures are happy with Wöber’s apparent failure because they believe it means Leeds United will have to drop that €15m. However, it’s far too early in the Euros to be so confident about that and hopefully things will change.
