Uncertainty around the future of Oliver Glasner will encourage stories linking other managers with Crystal Palace. That was the case last week when Getafe’s José Bordalás was said to be of interest to the Premier League club.

The claims looked like they may be coming from a source close to the manager’s camp. His Getafe contract expires at the end of the season, and pushing his stock a bit higher would do no harm.

Those claims were then laughed off by Getafe president Ángel Torres. Speaking at a Christmas function, he was asked about the Crystal Palace rumours.

In response, Torres said: “A lot of nonsense has been said. That the coach was going to leave, that he’s very happy here and besides, he doesn’t speak English… So why would he go there?”

The Getafe president then made odd comments about a renewal, saying a contract offer could depend on how he feels when he wakes up on any given morning.

This isn’t out of character. During the Christantus Uche transfer saga, he was speaking to the media endlessly. Many of his comments appeared odd and self-serving, and that hasn’t changed.

Bordalás wasn’t impressed by Torres’ comments about his language skills. At the weekend, the manager snapped back and insisted he – and his staff – can speak English.

Inevitably, Torres wasn’t able to leave it there.

Spanish newspaper Marca quote him as saying: “I’m the one who doesn’t know English. I was just joking. Pepe (the manager’s nickname) will go wherever he wants, he knows he won’t have any problem. A sense of humour is very scarce these days.”

Crystal Palace appear to have been caught up in a public row between manager and president.
