Borussia Mönchengladbach had Leeds United’s Maximilian Wöber on loan last season and they are keen on bringing him back to the club this summer.
Towards the end of last season, Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus said his side have held talks with the Whites for the defender.
Mönchengladbach are having a training camp in Tegernsee and this gave Rheinische Post a chance to have a chat with Virkus, who talked about the possibility of bringing Wöber back to the club.
On July 7th, Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg reported Daniel Farke’s side are demanding €10-12m for the Austria international, which is too high for Gladbach. Virkus has now backed that up, without specifying Leeds’ request.
“We are of course monitoring the market. We cannot meet Leeds United’s demands and Leeds are not looking for a loan. That’s why the story is on hold for now,” he said.
The centre-back had earlier admitted that Austria manager Ralf Rangnick convinced him to leave Leeds on loan because they were in the Championship last season.
The Whites will continue to play in the second division and that could convince the player to move elsewhere in this window.
Gladbach are willing to wait towards the end of the window to find out if they can sign the Leeds man on a favourable deal.
“But we have always found good solutions – and players like Max Wöber sometimes come back onto the market right at the end. Of course there are also late decisions,” Virkus explained.
