Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker Pedro Neto is hopeful of making it to the Euros with Portugal this summer.
The 23-year-old was this week interviewed by Para 1 podcast, and in quotes brought by O Jogo, he talked a little about his drama with the national team.
Neto only has five appearances for Portugal, having missed Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup through injury.
Now he claims he’s working to stay fit at Wolves and hopefully get called up by Roberto Martinez in the summer.
“I was unlucky to have both injuries just before two major tournaments. I’m working hard and very keen to represent the Portuguese national team,” said Neto.
“Sometimes I have five opponents in front of me and the fans are already ‘Ooooooh’, making a huge racket to see if I’ll start running with the ball. And I say: ‘Calm down, this time I’m going to be calm’.”
Playing for Wolves this season, Neto has three goals and 11 assists in 22 appearances. He’s more or less played in all attacking positions recently, and perhaps that versatility is what could give him a place in Portugal’s squad for the Euros. Since he missed their last two matches also due to injury, he’ll certainly be worried about staying fit in the coming months.
