Burnley’s Hjalmar Ekdal was on the sidelines for six months due to a hamstring injury and regained full fitness in December.
The centre-back played 48 minutes in the FA Cup win over Reading in January and that’s been his only appearance this season for the Clarets.
Later that month, Burnley let him join FC Groningen on loan until the end of this season. He’s made four starts for the Dutch club and has impressed with his performances.
FotbollDirekt has a report on the 26-year-old’s future and Burnley’s stance on sanctioning a permanent move in the summer window.
Despite his recent form, the defender isn’t expected to stay at Groningen beyond his loan spell because the Championship club rate him.
The Sweden international’s contract at Turf Moor lasts until 2027 and Scott Parker’s side ‘refuse to sell Ekdal cheaper’.
Burnley invested SEK 32m [€3m] plus SEK 10m [€900,000] as bonuses to buy the player from Djurgårdens IF in January 2023. The report states the English club want to recover the fee they paid through his sale.
FotbollDirekt rule out a return to Sweden.
