Sporting CP have been trying to find a new home for Marcus Edwards for much of the winter transfer window, as the 26-year-old’s time in Portugal comes to an end which nobody involved had planned for.
Edwards came through the youth system at Tottenham but wasn’t able to make the grade and moved to Vitória de Guimarães, with Spurs keeping 50% of a future transfer fee. He moved to Sporting in 2020 and Tottenham kept that 50% as part of the deal, later reducing it in negotiations to sign Pedro Porro.
Now on the verge of a move to Burnley, Sporting valued Edwards at €20-30m not so long ago but his development stalled and there’s been disciplinary issues. Sporting manager Rui Borges has kept Edwards out of his squad and the winger hasn’t made an appearance since November.
In their efforts to find Edwards a new club, the Portuguese media reported Sporting were willing to listen to loan offers or permanent transfers with a €8-10m fee.
Sunday’s edition of Record reports Edwards is joining Burnley in a loan move which will become permanent if the club are promoted to the Premier League. Burnley would then pay €10m plus a further €1m in potential bonus payments and Sporting keep 10% of a future sale. He’s now set for a medical.
O Jogo’s Sunday edition reports Edwards set off on Saturday for England. A Bola report the same and state he’ll have his Burnley medical today before signing his Clarets contract.
