If you had to describe Paul Pogba’s return to Manchester United in two words, they’d be “marketing” and “masterstroke”.
The latter because the 23-year-old is one of the most talented young footballers out there, and the former because, well, #POGBACK and everything that went with it.
Often blamed over the past three years for failures in the transfer market, Ed Woodward, Manchester United’s CEO, is now being lauded for pulling off a coup, albeit, at first glance, a very expensive one.
Yet, with the fee being split in two instalments, and considering the club’s revenue, it really isn’t that bad.
Furthermore, the Sunday Times claimed signing Pogba could bring in up to £40m in revenue in his first year at the club, which, if true, means they’ll have pretty much recouped the first half of the transfer fee (£89m) in the first 12 months.
One man who sees exactly what’s going on at Manchester United is one of Pogba’s France teammates, Kingsley Coman.
The 20-year-old spoke to SportBild this week about his friend’s transfer and said: “On one hand, Paul is a player with incredible abilities, he’s a fantastic midfielder. The price is not only down to his performances on the pitch, but also those off it.
“Pogba has an incredible marketing value. Paul is the man you remember, he’s a huge marketing attraction for Manchester United. If I could choose one player, I’d love to have Pogba at Bayern. He’s fantastic.”
It’s a bit late for the wishes, Kingsley.
