Bruno Lage could be set to join Benfica as their new manager, despite his failures at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Botafogo.

That’s according to Record, who say Lage is getting closer and closer to becoming Benfica’s new manager.

The newspaper has learned that Lage is currently the frontrunner for the position after the surprise dismissal of Roger Schmidt.

The Portuguese side have several names in their portfolio, including Portuguese managers and foreigners, but it is the former Wolves boss who is considered the ‘best option’ at this moment in time.

He matches director of football Rui Costa’s ideas the most and is the preferred route for them to take at this moment in time. He is now pushing to hire the former Wolves boss, who he wants in place by team training on Friday.

The belief is that Lage has a deep knowledge of Benfica, who he won the tile with in 2018/19, which helps his cause. So does the fact he is immediately available.

They are seemingly happy to ignore his unhappy spells with Wolves and Botafogo, which lasted 51 games and 15 games respectively and believe he has the ‘mobilising profile’ that the club needs.

A deal between the two parties is now being worked on and close to being done to instil him quickly and bring him back to the Portuguese side.
