When the Argentine media last night got to know that Valentin Barco would start in Brighton & Hove Albion’s clash against Manchester City, there was quite some excitement.
It was seen as a great chance for the 19-year-old to shine and show all his potential in such a big challenge in his first full match for the Seagulls.
Well, instead it was something of disaster, not only because Manchester City beat Brighton 4-0, but also because Barco’s performance eas far from good. And Argentine newspaper Olé today writes about it.
The outlet points out that his debut was a ‘nightmare’, as he was ‘unluckily involved’ in three goals from Pep Guardiola’s side. They point out the Catalan manager even seemed to give the player some ‘encouragement’ after the match.
Olé now admits that his Premier League debut happened to soon, and he should maybe have spent another year in Argentina.
They recall that Boca Juniors president Juan Joman Riquelme had been ‘cautious’ about the player and protecting him from the media hype. Riquelme was furious with those around the youngster for how they forced the Boca exit, and voiced worry about the hype getting too much and the distractions growing too quickly.
The newspaper insists that Barco can still be a ‘crack’, although, as it just may take a longer adaptation for him to succeed at Brighton.
