Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen has admitted he is hoping his dream of playing at a major tournament with the Netherlands is granted this summer.
The Dutchman has been speaking to ESPN, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, about his hopes of the summer after making the Netherlands’ preliminary squad for Euro 2024.
Verbruggen is one of several goalkeepers being considered by Ronald Koeman at this moment in time, with Justin Bijlow, Mark Flekken and Nick Olij also in contention.
The Brighton goalkeeper has been the first choice over the past few months after a tight battle with Flekken for the position over the last 18 months as Bijlow was out injured.
He appeared to have won the battle, starting four straight European qualifiers against France, Greece, Ireland and Gibraltar before sitting on the bench against Scotland and then returning for the clash against Germany in March.
His inclusion in the big games would suggest he is the number one for Koeman at this moment in time and the Brighton goalkeeper seems to think the same, hoping that means his dream will be coming true.
“I am always very proud to be here, but a finals tournament is of course something that stays with you after your career,” he said.
“Those are the things you dream about. So maybe it’s an extra touch of excitement to be here.
“I hope so, of course. I am ready. If you have been in goal in the last four qualifying matches, you at least have a good chance.
“It would of course be a disappointment if you are not on the field, that applies for everyone here. I feel like I’m in good shape, so I hope I’m number one.”
