Brighton and Hove Albion are interested in striker Mateo Retegui but could face competition from rivals Crystal Palace for his signature.
That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who say the player’s agent is set to fly to London for potential transfer talks ahead of the summer.
Retegui has been shining in Argentina with Tigre this season, with six goals in eight games in Liga Profesional this season.
That has seen him called up to the Italy squad for this international break and he has taken full advantage of that so far, bagging a goal in the 2-1 loss to England on Thursday.
That strike was ‘enough for him to show personality, nastiness’ and a ‘sense of goal’ and has put his name further into the light.
The summer transfer window looks like it will be a busy one for him and while he will fly back to Tigre on Monday, his father and agent will not be following him.
They’re set to stay in Italy then fly to London, where they plan to hold ‘appointments, meetings and market contacts’ ahead of a possible transfer.
They know that clubs in Serie A and the Premier League are ‘following him’ and it is Brighton and Crystal Palace in the latter who ‘would be interested’.
The player himself would prefer to move to Italy but the decision could be taken out of his hands, with Tigre planning to spend €2.1 this summer to sign him permanently from Boca Juniors before then selling him on for a major profit.
The goal against England has only increased the interest and the Premier League duo may face competition from the likes of Udinese, who had already approached him in January. He rejected those advances believing he could get more high-profile suitors.
Whether he would deem Brighton or Crystal Palace as such remains to be seen, but it appears they intend to be in the picture, nonetheless.
