On Tuesday, we covered reports from Denmark on the rapid transfer of Luis Binks from Coventry City to Brøndby. The defender has been identified to replace Jacob Rasmussen who had moved to RB Leipzig, and claims yesterday said a medical could be held before the end of the day.
Brøndby went one better than that. Not only did they complete the medical and formalities, but they also managed to announce the 23-year-old’s arrival from Coventry City. They’d likely been working on it longer than that, with the defender having followed multiple Brøndby players on Instagram in the days before.
As that was all ongoing, the Danish media got a little carried away, with one article using Opta data to suggest Binks is comparable to Liverpool superstar Virgil van Dijk.
The hope was that the rush would allow Binks to train this morning, but Tipsbladet – who have been excellent on this transfer – report work to secure a work permit is still ongoing.
Prior to Brexit, Gillingham-born Binks wouldn’t have required a work permit for Denmark as it’s in the EU, but since the full withdrawal the process has got more difficult and football hasn’t escaped.
There’s no suggestion of it being something which could reverse the transfer, it’s simply more paperwork to get through.
Tipsbladet quote head coach Frederik Birk as saying: “I can say this much, he was not on the training pitch today because he needs a work permit. He comes from outside the EU now, so he and my player caretaker have been working on it.
“But he is a left-footed defender, good size, good in the air and has ambitions for the game. He has played in a league where he may not feel he has come into his own in that area. It will be exciting to see, and I am looking forward to having Luis with us.”
When that will be is unclear, but it’s being worked on right now.
