Brentford saw a €2m bid for Fortuna Düsseldorf striker Dawid Kownacki ‘rejected’ in the January transfer window, with the player now set for a free transfer in the summer instead.
That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenburg, who says the Bees now face competition from Union Berlin and Freiburg for his signature.
We covered a report at the beginning of February that stated Brentford had made a move for Kownacki, with it explained that work permit issues had stopped things progressing.
That’s because the GBE calculator for determining if a player can get a work permit had the striker earning eight points in total, seven short of the 15 required. If a deal had gone through, Kownacki would have had to be immediately loaned back out.
That report stated a figure of €2.5m had been offered by Brentford but Plettenburg says the figure was actually €2m.
Either way, he confirms it was rejected by Düsseldorf and now the striker ‘will leave’ Fortuna in the summer on a free transfer.
The ‘hot stage’ for his signature has now apparently started, with Union Berlin and Freiburg the hot favourites for his signature but Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz and Borussia Monchengladbach also in the picture.
He fails to mention if Brentford are still keen, but they presumably would be given they were willing to pay €2m for a player who couldn’t even play for them in January.
He’s certainly a name to keep an eye on, with his tally of ten goals and six assists in 22 games in the 2.Bundesliga this season seemingly enough to convince several clubs to think about him in the summer.
