SC Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken is on Brentford’s wish-list for the summer, according to Kicker.
The 29-year-old has received an offer to take an ‘attractive step’ in his career and it’s likely to have been made by the Bees.
David Raya is the No.1 at Brentford and has a deal expiring in 2024. He has rejected multiple renewal offers and could leave the Premier League side at the end of this season.
Faced with the possibility of losing Raya, Brentford have started looking for a new stopper and have apparently set their sights on Flekken. The London side see him as the ‘ideal solution’ to replace Raya, if he were to leave the club.
Freiburg are fourth in the table and in contention to qualify for the Champions League next season. This would make it difficult for Thomas Frank’s side to take the stopper away from the German club.
On the other hand, Brentford could offer the Netherlands international a ‘higher salary’ to join them. Kicker state he has a €13m release clause and activating it would make it easier for Frank’s side to secure his services in the summer.
Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach has refused to comment about the clause and has insisted Flekken must clarify his future in the coming weeks.
“It shouldn’t go on until May. We would like to have clarity from Mark beforehand and thus planning security,” Hartenbach said.
