Brentford midfielder Sergi Canos has hailed their opening day win over Arsenal, labelling it an ‘unforgettable memory’.

The Bees made their return to the top flight of English football after a 74-year absence last week when they hosted the Gunners at their brand new Brentford Community Stadium.

Like all promoted sides, they would have been expecting a tough test on the opening day, but that did not prove to be the case.

Instead, Thomas Frank’s side gave Arsenal something of a footballing lesson in a display that saw them dominate from minute one and come away with a 2-0 win.

It was a momentous occasion, sparked to life by Canos’ opening goal, and a moment the Spaniard won’t be forgetting any time soon.

“It is an unforgettable memory,” he told Cadena SER.

“It was a very exciting day. The truth is that I have no words. What we experienced the other day was spectacular.

“The way the fans gave their all and with a full pitch, it was brutal.

“Since I was little, I have had to make very important decisions, but when the goal came in the other day, you say: it was all worth it.”

Canos has been at Brentford since a £2.61m move from Norwich in 2017, having joined the Canaries from Liverpool the year before.

He struggled to make an impression at either club, with just one appearance for the Reds senior team and six for the Canaries.

He’s developed into a vital cog in the Brentford machine, though, racking up 209 appearances and an impressive 33 goals and 31 assists in those games.

Now a bonafide part of the furniture, he’s keen to give his all for a club.

“Brentford is my second family,” he added.

“They treat me like one of their own. It’s the philosophy of the club, and it’s how we are on the pitch.

“There’s no backbiting and no bad faces. It’s all about helping each other because we are a team. Here you feel like family.

“I really enjoyed the weekend, but on Monday, I wanted more. I know I can give more, and I know the club can give more, so we’re going to fight a lot harder in this Premiership.”
