Brentford defender Pontus Jansson will be allowed to make his debut for Malmö FF sooner rather than later as a rule change works in his favour.

That’s according to Fotboll Direkt, who cover the situation today ahead of the Brentford defender moving to the Swedish side in the summer.

The 32-year-old is set to join Malmö on a free transfer on July 1st given his current deal with Brentford expires at the end of June.

That means Jansson was set to be forced to wait for his MFF comeback, with that initially scheduled for July 22nd in a clash against AIK.

However, a FIFA rule change means he can now legally appear against Mjällby on July 9th and then Djurgården on July 17th.

The newspaper explains that FIFA has pushed through a rule change that will mean Sweden’s transfer window will be open for eight weeks during the winter and eight weeks during the summer.

Previously the winter window had been open for 12 weeks and summer for only four, hence why Jansson was not set to make his debut until later in July after he had left Brentford.

Now he can make his return much earlier, a fact sporting director Daniel Andersson has admitted they are delighted about.

“It’s clear that we want him available as quickly as possible, so it’s great,” he said.

“But it also gives us the opportunity to get other new acquisitions ready to play, should we make any. It feels great for us but also for Allsvenskan as a product.

“Three matches are still ten percent of the Allsvenskan where you are not allowed to have your new signings.”

It sounds like Pontus will miss out on a summer holiday this year.
