Brentford forward Sergi Canós has admitted he is ‘looking forward’ to a move to La Liga more with every passing year.
Canós has been in England since 2013, when he joined Liverpool’s U18s from Barcelona’s U16 set up.
He worked his way up the Liverpool youth ranks over the next couple of years before eventually joining Norwich on a permanent basis in 2016.
He only stayed at Carrow Road for a year before moving to Brentford in a €2.9m deal in 2017 and has been with the Bees ever since.
He’s racked up 245 appearances in all competitions in that time featuring regularly for the club as they secured promotion to the Premier League and stayed up so impressively last season.
And while he insists, he’s happy where he is, he does admit he can’t wait to secure a return to Spain at some point.
“I see myself in La Liga,” he told Marca.
“I love how it is and how it is evolving. I don’t know if it will be sooner or later, but I would like to play in Spain. Every year I’m looking forward to it more and more.
“(But) I feel like an important figure, both for the club and for my team-mates (at Brentford).
“I arrived at Brentford at the age of 18 when the club was fighting to avoid relegation to the third tier and, after all the hard work, we are eleventh in the Premiership. It’s a source of pride.”
For now, the focus is on getting fit and becoming a regular for Brentford again after an injury lay off saw him miss the start of the season.
That come as a huge blow to the Spaniard, who still harbours hopes of making his debut for the national side after playing for the U19’s earlier in his career.
While he is unlikely to earn a spot at the World Cup, the same cannot be said of teammate David Raya, who is very much in contention for a place in Luis Enrique’s squad.
That is something Canós believes would be more than deserved, insisting that the Brentford number one should be Spain’s first choice too.
“David Raya deserves to go to the World Cup, in fact I think he is the starting goalkeeper. He is coming on this season, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership,” he added.
“It would be incredible to go with the national team, but at the moment I need to keep getting minutes, competitive rhythm and enjoy myself. Everything else, if it has to come, it will.”
